Family of California teen mom killed by school cop to get $13 million

The Lengthy Seashore Unified College District has settled a lawsuit over the deadly taking pictures of an 18-year-old mom by a faculty security officer for $13 million, attorneys for her household stated Monday.

On Sept. 27, 2021, Manuela “Mona” Rodriguez was shot by security officer Eddie Gonzalez as she was sitting within the passenger seat of a transferring automotive a couple of block from the campus of Millikan Excessive College.

Rodriguez, the mom of a child who was 5 months outdated on the time of the taking pictures, was left brain-dead for a number of days till she was faraway from life assist.

Rodriguez’s household filed a wrongful-death lawsuit towards the college district in early 2022 alleging battery and negligence.

The household is about to talk at a information convention Tuesday.

The Lengthy Seashore Unified College District didn’t present remark Monday to The Instances.

Following the taking pictures, Gonzalez was fired by the district for violating its use-of-force coverage and charged by the Los Angeles County district legal professional’s workplace with homicide. Gonzalez, who pleaded not responsible, is awaiting trial.

The incident, which was captured on movies, drew sharp criticism from regulation enforcement consultants.

In a single video Gonzalez will be seen approaching the passenger aspect of a automotive occupied by Rodriguez and the daddy of her baby, Rafeul Chowdhury, then 20, and his 16-year-old brother, none of whom had been armed.

Rodriguez and one other lady had been concerned in a struggle that Gonzalez tried to interrupt up.

Within the video, the automotive drives away, and Gonzalez fires twice at it.

“The automotive clearly was not a weapon, because it was transferring away from him when he fired,” Charles “Sid” Heal, a retired L.A. County sheriff’s commander, informed The Instances in 2021.

“The automotive isn’t a risk, so there isn’t any justification for using lethal pressure right here,” Seth Stoughton, a former Florida police officer and a College of South Carolina regulation professor, informed The Instances.

“This case actually illustrates the significance of holding public officers accountable,” Dist. Atty. George Gascón stated in October 2021. “Particularly public officers which might be entrusted with the protection of our household and our children.”
