L.A. County Sheriff’s Department to review use of force in TikTok video showing Black man’s arrest


The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Division has opened a “use of power” investigation following a viral video of an arrest of a younger Black man who stated he was racially profiled by deputies.

Within the video, which garnered 1.7 million views on TikTok as of Friday, two deputies might be seen arresting a person who has his palms raised.

“Am I getting arrested?” the person says. “What am I being detained for? Strolling?”

“We had been simply strolling to the shop,” the individual filming yells on the deputies as he warns his pals not to withstand. “We’re simply strolling.”

In accordance with Fox 11, which first reported on the arrest, three school college students had been headed to a retailer in South L.A. late Monday afternoon after taking courses at Los Angeles Commerce Technical School when deputies bought out of their automobile and grabbed 19-year-old Jayvonte George by his arms.

George informed the outlet he didn’t know why he was being arrested and was making an attempt to indicate deputies he was not a menace to them.

“I’ve seen lots of issues about police brutality, so I used to be making an attempt to place my palms up for my security and their security,” he stated.

The Sheriff’s Division stated in an announcement that the person they arrested matched the outline of suspects from two completely different incidents — a success and run and a automobile theft — that had taken place earlier that morning.

“Whereas making an attempt to detain the person and resolve the detaining deputies’ affordable suspicions he was one of many excellent suspects concerned in at the very least two separate crimes, the person didn’t cooperate with deputies,” the sheriff’s workplace stated in an announcement. “The incident escalated leading to a use of power.”

George was arrested for resisting an officer, in accordance with the assertion.
