Meet the 3 female mountain lion kittens living in the Simi Hills

The Simi Hills is now dwelling to 3 wholesome feminine mountain lion kittens. Their names are P-113, P-114 and P-115.

The mountain lion dubbed P-77 gave delivery to the trio that was discovered final week nestled in a dense patch of poison oak within the hills between the Santa Susana and Santa Monica mountains, in keeping with the Nationwide Park Service.

The kittens had been about 24 days previous when Nationwide Park Service biologists found their den northeast of Thousand Oaks. Biologists have been monitoring mountain lions as a part of a 20-year research with the state.

“Will probably be fascinating to find out how these kittens will use the panorama as soon as they become older and disperse, notably in the event that they determine to remain within the Simi Hills or cross freeways to enter bigger pure areas,” mentioned Jeff Sikich, the lead biologist of the park service’s mountain lion research. “It’s encouraging to see copy in our small inhabitants of mountain lions, particularly after all of the mortalities now we have documented within the final 12 months.”

Since March 2022, 15 mountain lions have died within the research space, Sikich mentioned; 9 had GPS radio collars, and 6 weren’t collared. The bulk had been killed in deadly car strikes, one died of mange, and one was shot, he mentioned.

Probably the most well-known large cat to die was P-22, who was born within the Santa Monica Mountains. He died in December at age 12 after he was hit by a automotive and was euthanized because of long-term well being issues and accidents.

Mountain lions are being killed at a sooner charge than they will reproduce, in keeping with a UC Davis research that mentioned 535 mountain lions had been reportedly killed on California highways between 2015 and 2022.

P-77, the mom of the three kittens, is estimated to be about 5 to 7 years previous, and she or he established her grownup vary in a small patch between the 101 and 118 freeways, the Nationwide Park Service mentioned. She was first captured in November 2019 and tracked by biologists crossing each freeways and hung out within the adjoining mountain ranges.

“Hopefully, we are able to observe these kittens as they develop and disperse from their mom,” Sikich mentioned. “It’ll be fascinating when these kittens develop up and disperse. Will they cross the hills, cross the freeways or to different areas.”

The kittens had been tagged on their ears by biologists and could possibly be radio-collared once they become older.

It’s unclear who the daddy of the brand new litter is. Biologists suspect he got here from the Santa Susana Mountains and left after mating with P-77.

Biologists imagine that is P-77’s second litter. This marks the third litter within the Simi Hills noticed by the biologists. One litter was born to P-62 in 2018 and P-67 in 2020, and each moms have since died, in keeping with the Nationwide Park Service.

The Santa Monica Mountains can sometimes see 10 to fifteen grownup or youthful mountain lions, not counting the cubs, Sikich mentioned.

Carrying on the mountain lion research’s format, the kittens had been designated with “P” for puma and a sequential quantity for his or her delivery order.

“Folks can be at liberty to name them no matter identify you wish to name them,” Sikich mentioned. “It could simply be tough to attempt to hold observe of tons of of names.”
